Lecture: The non-intended consequences of epidemic control decisions and lockdown on daily life of older generations
Lecturer: Assoc Prof Dr Stoyanka Cherkezova
Bulgarian Academy of Sciences
Institute for Population and Human Studies
The Covid – 19 pandemic has affected almost every aspect of the life of people of all ages. The changes even typical vary by generation and by country. The seniors – both the most aged and younger old (those at the end of their careers and the recent retirees) are among the most influenced groups. The lecture presents some of the changes in the daily lives of people 50+ in eight Danube Region countries (Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia). The conclusions are based on data from the 8th wave of The Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (1st SHARE Corona Survey) conducted during the summer months of 2020. The main issues addressed in the lecture are:
- What is the impact of lockdown on health (incl. mental health) and on healthy behaviour?
- How has it affected social contacts and mutual support inside and outside the family?
- What is the pandemic’s impact on labour market status and on working conditions in the late-career stagers?
- How have the ordinary patterns of behaviour changed due to the adherence to protective measures?
These issues generate good ground for a further fruitful discussion about the positive sides of the pandemic related changes and the possible solutions of the challenges?
